At Stay for Vacay, we knew “Vacay” was a new term for some. You might notice a popular Google search is “stay vacay meaning.” While the use of the term vacay is becoming more popular, it is not a valid Scrabble word…. yet. But it has made its way into the Merriam-Webster dictionary. And to confuse things a little more, vacay may also be spelled, vaca or vaycay. Some people are also unfamiliar with the term “Vacation Rental.” But when you say Airbnb, then they get it. Airbnb and VRBO have become synonymous with the Vacation Rental term.
Fun Fact: Most people are familiar with Airbnb and VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner). Many people also knew HomeAway, but they may not be aware that HomeAway and VRBO were both owned by Expedia. In June 2020, Expedia combined the two and now all users are directed to VRBO.
Vacation Rental Industry
But there is a whole vacation rental industry. In fact, next week is Vacation Rental Week, starting Monday, March 8, 2021. More information on that to come. There will be a special edition blog post on Monday devoted to kick off the week. And the industry has a lot of other terms. Then we thought, what other terms are there that people may not know. When you see terms like bleisure, short-term rental, home sharing, holistay…. what do they all mean?
A vacation, or vacay, should be fun and stress free. As a good stress reliever, we defined some of these terms for you so when you’re planning your next vacation, this is one less thing you have to worry about. Since our name, Stay For Vacay, includes some of the new terms, let’s start right there.
Stay For Vacay Glossary
So here it is. The Stay For Vacay Glossary.
BLEISURE: Combination of business and leisure. Extending a business trip to include vacation time.
FLEXCATION: You extend your stay longer on a trip, mixing work and play.
HOLISTAY: Similar to staycation, it is the combination of holiday vacation activities and staying near home.
HOME SHARING: People share their entire home or a portion of it to renters for vacation or other purposes.
SHORT-TERM RENTAL (STR): Furnished properties that are rented out for usually less than 30 days, and most commonly on a daily or weekly basis.
STAYCATION: Combination of stay and vacation; A stay at home vacation where engaging in activities within a day trip of your own home.
VACAY (also spelled Vaca or Vaycay) : Pronounced “vay-kay,” it’s an informal word for vacation.
VACATION RENTAL: Renting out furnished apartment, house, condo, cabin or cottage to tourists on a daily or weekly basis as an alternative to a hotel.
WORKCATION: A working vacation where you combine work and a vacation.
VAXICATION: A post vaccination vacation.
